Cesarean Birth

Having spent months in the warmth and safety of the womb, the baby experiences pain once contractions begin. At the same time, passing through the birth canal gives the baby some pleasure due to the massaging and caressing of the contractions pushing her forward. The combination of pain and pleasure leaves an everlasting profound impression on the baby, since it creates a  powerful experience of primal emotion.

Cesarean birth denies the baby the natural passage through the birth canal, and as a result, denies the baby from experiencing the physical and psychological pleasure she would have experienced in vaginal birth, since she is devoid of the birth canal’s massaging as she exits the womb.

Therefore, one of the possible characteristics of Cesarean birth is the baby’s need for plenty of touch (I recommend parents massage their baby often), and, at times, this can also appear in adulthood as a need for a lot of touch, hugs, and caresses.

The knowledge of her own body’s dimensions doesn’t come to the baby naturally, and the passage through the birth canal helps the baby in defining the borders and edges of her body. Therefore, another possible characteristic of Cesarean birth is the baby’s difficulty in grasping her own body dimensions – as if she doesn’t know where her body begins and where it ends. In adulthood this might be realized in some form of bodily awkwardness.

Due to the fact that the baby was ‘pulled out’ in the middle of the birth process, a possible realization of this in adulthood could be a difficulty to finish projects or other processes, since one of the thought patterns that result from a Cesarean birth is “I don’t know how to finish the process on my own.”

Sometimes in a Rebirthing session I can see the breather struggling through the breathing process, and not once did I see the breather simply stop and stand up, right in middle of the session, at the very peak of the breathing cycle – this is because the body remembers, and the body feels the need to be ‘pulled out’ at the height of the trauma. My role as a Rebirther is to support the breather in finishing the breathing process, and provide them with the safe feeling that they can finish the process on their own.

Thus, Rebirthing is a powerful tool that enables us to correct behavior patterns that result from thought patterns, and helps us bring healing and renewal into our lives.

The corrective affirmation for Cesarean birth thought pattern is “I am present in a safe world and have the ability to complete all processes on my own.”
