The Trauma of Birth

The Rebirthing process was rediscovered and developed by Leonard Orr, as a result of hundreds of “spontaneous rebirth” experiences. Orr came to understand the power of the process, after experiencing Rebirth during a meditation session in warm water. When he realized the power of the experience was in the breathing process itself, and not the warm water necessarily, he developed what we now know as Rebirthing. While Orr is mainly responsible for developing the technique, it is said that similar breathing techniques throughout history served shamans as a way to unleash the unconscious mind, or the “darkness”, in order to reach a higher spiritual plane and rebirth the spirit.

If we assume our thoughts create our realities, we therefore must address the moment of our birth, our first experience, and the first thought with which we arrive into this world. As there are different kinds of births, there are also different kinds of birth thought patterns, stemming from the baby’s thoughts during and after birth. For example, one thought that might result from a forceps or vacuum delivery, is “someone out there does not trust me to finish the process on my own”. The thought that might run through this person’s life is “people don’t trust me”. And the behavior pattern that might arise could be one that creates this reality, or attracts it, as validation, which might induce a feeling of failure. Another example for a thought that might come about during such birth, is “the first support I ever received hurt my head”. A possible thought pattern that might arise from this, is one that will show itself in moments when the person needs support. They will then abstain from asking for support, thinking “I’m not putting my head in someone else’s hands”.

Such thoughts and emotional traumas, which were repressed to the subconscious mind as part of an emotional defense mechanism, serve as an energetic blockage in both the emotional and physical body. The Rebirthing breathing in such cases, is “smarter” than the “breather” - each breathing session is unique, and in each session, in line with the breather’s level of awareness, the breathing process will resurface the materials one should encounter and let go of. And in the same way each birth is different and unique, so does each person experience the breathing process in their different and unique way. Rebirhing breathwork enhances the life force in the physical and the emotional body. This life force will take each person where they are meant to be.

In order to receive a "license to breathe" (i.e. to breathe independently without guidance), and to turn the process into a lifelong tool, it is necessary to breathe at least ten times with the support of a Rebirther. While the breathing itself is harmless, it is important to learn how to process our mind’s materials, and that is preferably done preferably with a Rebirther. If you choose to start this process, it is also important to find the right Rebirther for you. As a Rebirther, I know that in offering support you must serve as a clear mirror, as it is a great responsibility to walk in someone’s soul. As Leonard Orr says, “Rebirther Breathworkers can be called the spiritual vacuum cleaners of the planet."
